Scope

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) offers a powerful mechanism for managing the inherent complexity of sustainability, enabling stakeholders to articulate sustainability goals, explore “what-if” scenarios across multiple dimensions (i.e., social, economic, environmental, technical, individual), and formally reason about trade-offs among often conflicting objectives. Yet despite this potential, research specifically at the intersection of MDE and sustainability remains scarce and fragmented; relevant modeling expertise exists across domains but has not been systematically consolidated. Advanced MDE techniques such as collaborative and blended modeling further offer underexplored opportunities for participatory sustainability modeling.

This workshop addresses this gap along two complementary directions: the application of MDE toward engineering sustainable systems (sustainability by MDE), and the investigation of sustainability within MDE practices and tooling themselves (sustainability of MDE). It aims to highlight recent results, consolidate open challenges, and identify research opportunities across both directions, contributing to a shared body of knowledge at this intersection. The workshop welcomes both academic researchers and industrial practitioners working on either or both of these dimensions.

Topics

MDE for sustainability

  • Modeling languages, formalisms, and methods to tackle the complexity of sustainability through abstraction
  • Sustainability-related requirements through MDE: definition, design, traceability, and evolution
  • Multi-paradigm, multi-view, and multi-level modeling for sustainability
  • Collaborative and participatory modeling for sustainability
  • Reusability as a modeling methodology for enhancing sustainability

Sustainability of MDE

  • Technical sustainability, e.g., evolution, model-based reconfiguration
  • Environmental sustainability, e.g., energy-efficient model transformations
  • Economic sustainability, e.g., reuse and repurposing of models
  • Social sustainability, e.g., inclusive modeling practices, human factors

Technology for Sustainability of/with MDE

  • Digitization for sustainability: smart systems, digital twins, twin transition, cyber-physical social systems, intelligent ecosystems
  • Sustainability-critical digital technologies, e.g., AI and LLMs, blockchain
  • Organizational aspects, maturity models, and lifecycle models
